Hastings Canyon

Unfortunately it's not there anymore. Hastings Canyon was filled in by the Catellus Corporation as part of their developing the site for homes on this section of the bluff. Hastings Canyon is pretty small when compared to the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains but it is no less a valuable resource to the families, children and residents of Playa Del Rey and Westchester than the Santa Monica canyons are to our neighbors to the north. Hastings Canyon can be found at the West end of the West Bluffs and has trails leading down to the Ballona salt marshes in Area 'B'.

Hastings Canyon -was- truly a delight to young kids who can hike the trails, explore, search for wildlife (lizards, butterflies, etc.) and pretend to be in search of ancient dinosaur bones.

A view of the trail inside Hastings canyon as you first approach it. From another point you can get a wonderful view of parts of the marsh, communities north such as Mar Vista and the Santa Monica Mountains.

Another small canyon that intersects with Hastings Canyon has geological features that makes you almost feel as if you are in Arizona. Years of erosion show layers of sediment detailing weather conditions over thousands of years. Here some kids role play as fossil hunters.

Where is it? Hastings Canyon is on private property and a part of the West Bluffs though many people visit everyday to hike while others walk their dogs. To view it take Manchester to Park Hill Dr. and turn north. The street ends at the West Bluffs. Hastings Canyon can also be accessed from Cabora road at the bottom.
